Re: Portuguese of 17th Century Virginia

Tee, references to Portuguese of West Africa can be very deceptive. In my mind's eye I picture an Angolan who speaks Portuguese. With regard to Cape Verdians nothing could be farther from the truth. I have known Cape Verdians since 1959. I incorrectly thought of them as my only Puerto Rican friends. To me their Latino surnames and appearance suggested a Latin American origin. One day I made a dumb comment about the circumstances which had brought them to Wash., DC from Puerto Rico, only to learn that they had been a close kinship community in Mass. for 200 years. They had come as sailors and whalers and have no history of having ever been slaves.
