Cousin Will, It is not all about being all knowing, it is about doing the research instead of speculating. And to answer your question. No, I do not think it is a mispelling for Chevis. In the following marriage record, you will see that the spelling of Cheves and Kiese. Two totally different names Pierre August & Gabrielle Tessier, Parents of Celesis Auguste Mallet (she is listed as Celeste August married 1st August 1826 to John Cheves, Grafe(half White) Lib. (free) of Lafourdche. (Opelousas church Registers of Blacks. Volume 2 Page 59) Parents of John chevers were John Chevers and Rosalie Kiese. One thing that I have noticed a lot is name chopping. French creoles carried more than one name. EXAMPLE: Marie Jeanne Nancy Chevis married Louis Honore Gradenigo. NOTICE: In the census records the name and the ages. 1850 - Honore Gradenigs 60 M
1860 - Honore Gradenige 60
1870 - Honore Gradings 67
1880 - Mrs Honori Gra... 75 Now, we all know that ages differ in census records, but notice her name. In 1850, she went by Nancy. In 1860, she went by Mary. In 1870, she went by Marie. ************************************** 1850 United States Federal Census
Name: Honore Gradenigs
