Re: john chavis(chavers) of louisiana
In Response To: Re: john chavis(chavers) of louisiana ()
This might or might not help, but on the 1792 Opelousas census of free blacks and mulattos(housed in the Cuban Papers), John Shivers, free mulatto shows up. Shivers is a variant of the surname Chavis/Chevis/Chavirs. I suspect he might be related to the Nancy Chavis who shows up in St. Landry Parish. John Chevis also shows up on the 1810 census of St. Martin Parish(Attakapas). These might be clues. And The Chavis line made its way into Louisiana from North Carolina(if im not mistaken, that is where the bulk of the Chavis family lived back then. I saw a marriage license in the catholic books referencing Chavis.) Apparently, John Chavis must be a popular name because I've seen several men of color with the name John Chavis. Matter of fact, a John Chevis, signed as security for the marriage license of my g-g grandparents, Leonard LaChapelle & Marie Theresa Donatto. Just my two cents.
