South Carolina Egyptiams - F.P.O.C.?
I have long noticed that Uriah Bolton, b. Tenn. 1805,(1880 census Sumner Co. Tenn. - LDS website) ) gives Egypt as the place of birth of his father and England as the place of birth of his mother. I had assumed this was in error since an early Bolton was in the Pee Dee Region of S.C. in 1735 and the Boltons were recorded as free people of color or mulatto in S.C. , Tenn., and Mississippi from 1790 through 1850. Then I located this from records held by the S.C. Department of Archives: Series:S165005 item:67; Date:December 7, 1858 Committee on the Colored Population, report on a resolution of inquiry on imposing the capitation tax on Egyptians and Indians, as now on Free Blacks, mulattoes, and mestizoes. (4pages) Is it possible that some of the South Carolina F.P.O.C. had Egyptian ancestors? I have not seen anything else about Egyptians in S.C. during this period. Messages In This Thread
