Re: Black persons in early Washington County, Penn
In Response To: Re: Black persons in early Washington County, Penn ()
===================================== When you have the time could you check for the ADAMS & WILSON surnames? I am not sure if BELL had more information than what was in the early census. ===================================== He had access to registers, estate records, census records etc. but the work mostly contains statistics from such sources with the occasional example. There is no mention of the surnames ADAMS, WILSON, and HEATON nor first names Abraham and Isaac. He does mention that the earliest records of "blacks" is in the estates of Yohogania County, Virginia. This county administered justice to northern Washington County, Pennsylvania 1777-1781. =====================================
The title of the work is Early Records of Washington County, Pennsylvania. One of the chapters is "Black Persons before 1825 (In earlier days known as negro (sic), colored, African persons)". =====================================
None at present. Doug
