Although the history and heritage of Appalachia’s darkskinned Melungeon people have been sources of deep and continuing controversy, there has been relatively little research on Melungeon communities or family life. This lack of scholarship indicates how little Melungeon life differed from that of their white neighbors even in the era before assimilation.
