Actually I doubt very much that they would have "stood out in NY" in the early 1900's maybe in Lynchburg, VA., now language might have been an issue, whether they spoke Dutch, French, some time of Patios. NY during that time was full of various immigrants coming from all over the world up to and including those who were descendants of slaves owned by the various European nations in the 16th, 17th and 18th and 19th centuries or the descandants of the planters who left because the economies were failing. I suggest that the person read up on the history of Surinam.
