Re: Thomas West/ Virginia/ Ohio
In Response To: Thomas West/ Virginia/ Ohio ()
I am also researching this family. Thomas West is my 4th great grandfather. I have found him listed on the 1830 census for Elkrun, Columbiana, OH (listed as free person of color); the 1840 census for Greene, Columbiana, OH (listed as free person of color); and the 1850 census for Independence, Cuyahoga, OH (listed as mulatto).
His son Ephraim is my 3rd great grandfather. His family, except his wife (who was German), is listed as mulatto on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records for Independence, Cuyahoga, OH. The family is listed as white on the 1900 census and thereafter.
The West children and their offspring are always listed as mulatto on the early census documents while their spouses are listed as white. Although, both Thomas West and Susan are independently listed as mulatto. Susan is reportedly from Pennsylvania and Thomas from Virginia.
Has anyone found documentation of their marriage? There is none listed in the Cuyahoga Marriage Index, and I doubt it took place in Cuyahoga County. (They already had children when living in Columbiana County).
Finally, this family has a small cemetery in Independence, Cuyahoga OH. Pictures of the gravestones have been posted at findagrave.com. Included are photos of Thomas, Susan, and Enos gravestones. There is also a description of the family plot and information on where the cemetery records are held. (I think they are with the Western Reserve Historical Society.) http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=1971275&CScn=west+family&CScntry=4&CSst=37&
I would absolutely love to hear from others who are researching this family.
