Re: "Tar" ADAMS and Adam TOWER
In Response To: Re: Amanda Parker of near Harper's Ferry ()
I believe "Adam Tower" married September 1822 to Nancy Robertson found in the Marriage Register of Rev. Charles Wheeler, First Pastor of Baptist Church of Washington, PA is Tower ADAMS or "Tar" Adams. Wheeler's record says they are "colored people" Tower and Nancy are in South Strabane Township, Washington Co. PA in 1850 and Washington Township, Washington Co. PA in 1860 1850 census indicates "Tour" Adams born about 1788 1860 census indicates Tower Adams born about 1786 Tower Adams aka "Tar Adams" in the historical fiction book BRADY by Jean Fritz was active on the Underground Railroad in Washington County. Other Adams families (from Greene County just to the south) that were active in the UGRR are John and Eli Adams family of Hargus Creek, sons of Abraham Adams who was also born Maryland. My 4th Great Grandfather Jacob Adams born about 1780 in Maryland was appointed Administrator to Abraham's estate and my 3rd Great Grandfather Archibald H. Adams son of Jacob was a witness. A family story handed down from Archibald's son Jonathan K. Adams mentions slaves hiding in the woods and out buildings in reference to Greene County. Jonathan K. Adams was born 1835 in Greene County. I believe it highly likely that "Tar" Adams is related to this greater Adams family in Southwestern PA. Any new information on any of these ADAMS families? Jan |
