AME minister Jacklin Strange & Emanuel Strange
Jacklin Strange (1836-1920) & Emanuel Strange (c. 1840-1920) both from Winchester, VA?
Associated surnames: Arter, Jacquelin, Jenkins, Jordon/Jordan, Leonard, Lyles, McGuire, Smith, Strange, Weaver, Williams (Information compiled from census databases: Ancestry Library Edition, Family Search, Heritage Quest)
A founder of several Virginia AME churches, Rev. Jacklin/Jaquelin Strange (wife Hannah A. Weaver) is most likely a relative (brother or cousin) of Emanuel Strange of (Frederick or Clarke county?) VA and Pittsburgh, PA (wife Margaret). Rev. Jacklin Strange of Winchester and Alexandria, VA and Emanuel Strange of Pittsburgh, PA also appear to be related to (brother or cousin) Reuben Strange (1835-1900) of Philadelphia, PA, a son of FPOC Richard and Sarah Strange of Winchester, VA, and husband of Josephine Jenkins (c. 1845-1915) of Chesterfield County, VA.
Another relative (nephew or cousin) Reuben Strange (1855-1920), the Pittsburgh steelworker who married Catherine Williams, is a son of John and Chloe Strange of Greenway, Clarke County, VA. All of these VA-born men most likely are descendants or relatives of Reuben Strange, born c. 1767, a former slave who was freed by Edward McGuire in Winchester, Frederick, VA in 1817. Reuben’s sons Richard Strange of Winchester, VA and Reuben Strange Jr were freed by Virginia slaveholder Edward Jacquelin Smith of Frederick and Clarke counties. Rev. Jacklin Strange may be named for Edward J. Smith, whose household included several members of the African-American Strange family.
