Thanks, and yes I see your point here about the combined first and last name, and very much appreciate this insight. To me, "Tosspot" as the name assigned to the slave on the 1690s headright land grant seems to function as a sort of 'snapshot-upon-arrival": a man, experiencing profound mental and physical disorientation, unable to communicate through language, and 'belligerently' resisting efforts to constrain him. But, as you say, it will be important to think through the combination name "Timothy Tosspot" and its use across several generations.
