Yes, it is an excellent book. I was looking up a family member for a friend who had an ancestor (Peyton Randolph) born around 1820 in Prince Edward county VA. She said she thought he might have been free but I don't think he was. I thought he might have been one of those free people discussed in the book. It turns out the Randolph slaves freed in PE county VA did not take the last name Randolph.
