Dear Mr. Milteer. I'm interested in several of the names you list, if they were in Hertford or Northampton Counties before about 1750. Simmons, Williamson, Newsom, Turner, Smith and Lewis were all names of white(?) families who intermarried with my ancestors and their neighbors in Isle of Wight (later Southampton) County Virginia, just north of Hertford, in the early 1700's. The question I'm interested in is, how many of these VA families were actually of mixed race, and how much intermarriage (legal or otherwise) was happening on the Virginia border before mainstream VA society caught up with it in the middle of the century? I know about Moses Newsom and his descendants, but not about the others. The Virginia families I've researched were definitely not freeing their slaves at that era, so how did those surnames migrate into the FPOC community? If you have any information about the early history of those families, I'd love to hear about it.
