Q:
I am searching for information on William Croker, free colored of Orange County NC. His youngest son, John Nelson Croker was bound out in 1847 to Solomon Allen, a doctor in Orange later Alamance County. John Nelson married a free woman of color from Chatham County upper regiment, Sarah Lineberry. Sarah's mother was Caty Lineberry. Sarah also had siblings named Caty and Harrison. John Nelson had two siblings that I am aware of: Tempy Croker Archey (she married Larkin Archey of Chatham County) and William Croaker (he married Cornelia (Niely) Archey of Chatham County). Information on any of the above named individuals would be greatly appreciated.

Pamila,

This is what I have...

Sarah "Sally" LIMEBERRY/LINEBERRY/LINABERRY (possible parents, James & Anna LIMEBERRY)(living next door in 1850 Chatham County, North Carolina census) married Zachariah ARCHEY, son of John and Rebecca MNU ARCHEY (needs further verification), 12-25-1843 in Guilford County, North Carolina. They had at least ten (10) children namely; Larkin H. ARCHEY, John F. ARCHEY, Luvina ARCHEY, James M. ARCHEY, Malacha ARCHEY, Albert F. ARCHEY, Cyntha A. ARCHEY, Sarah S. ARCHEY, Zachariah ARCHEY Jr., and William Eldridge ARCHEY.

Tempy/Tampa MNU married Larkin ARCHEY, also a son of John and Rebecca MNU ARCHEY (needs further verification). Larkin and Tampa had at least one child, William ARCHEY.

William F. CROKER married Cornelia Ann "Nelly" ARCHEY, daughter of John and Rebecca MNU ARCHEY, 12-20-1851, in Chatham County, North Carolina, by Solomon STEWART. William and Nelly had six (6) children namely; LucyAnn Elizabeth CROKER SAIN/SAINE/SANE, John Wesley CROKER, Larkin Henderson CROKER, Simeon H. CROKER, James W. CROKER, and Albert Francis CROKER. William F. CROKER served in the Civil War; Company A, 45th USCT. He died in Camp Casey, Virginia 01-02-1865. Nelly later married William T. GAINES, 10-19-1880, in Wayne County, Indiana.

Sarah and Zachariah, Tempa and Larkin, and William and Nelly, and a John CROKER I can't place, all moved to the Greenville Settlement in Darke County, Ohio/Randolph County, Indiana.

I don't know where William CROKER and his son John Nelson CROKER fit, in the above scenario. This is obviously a different but still connected Sarah LINEBERRY??? I do have a John CROKER, born about 1836 in North Carolina that seems to match up with "your" John Nelson CROKER. However, I have his spouse as a Lucelia MNU and children as Reuben CROKER, James CROKER, and Mary CROKER. I have not been able to take this John CROKER past 1860. I don't know where this John belongs but he is on the same generation level as William F. CROKER and Tempa CROKER ARCHEY and is living along with William and Tempa in the Greenville Settlement (not in the same household).

Doug
