I've been doing a lot of research, too, and found that after the Civil War, there seemed to be more tendency simply to classify people as black or white. I saw that change from mulatto to black when following some specific people. I seem to recall having read somewhere that the Southerners were trying to harden the "line" since emancipation of the slaves.
