Re: Assumptions about the racial origins of "fpoc"

Good morning..
I am looking at your website, and I see the half brothers...The one thing I can tell you is the contrast is way different between the two pictures..The picture of the brother that was the minister has low contrast, while the other is extremely high contrast..
As a person who has worked in custom black and white photo developing and printing, I can tell you the contrast is high on the one in order to show the subjects features,,,In other words, he was really dark skinned, and the light bouncing off his face is what you are seeing rather than his skin color..Without the contrast, you would not have been able to see his features..As it is, his eyes are still in deep shadow...and the whiteness of the shirt is very white compared to his skin..even with the contrast...
His wife is definately lighter skinned as are their children...
So, like you say, it could very well be that the enumerator brother based his classification of the whole family on the father...I don't know why, but sometimes that was done...In my own family, one of my ancestors was passing for white, and the census had his whole family classed as white when neither the wife nor the children could speak english...The wife was Choctaw (mixedblood)..She and the children only spoke Choctaw at the time...The children were varied in their skin colors from really dark to fairly light...
In other cases, I have seen where the father or mother would be classed as Black, with the spouse and children classed Mulatto...
The only thing I can think to do is to research and find out what, if any, difference was made legally between a full Black and a Mulatto in 1910...Or a free born and a freed slave...If no difference was made legally, then at least you can put to rest the thought of the minister brother deliberately trying to cause hurt to the other brother...
Socially, classifying the full Black brother and his family as Black on a census wasn't going to make or break them, as people could see what color(s) they were and would either MAKE a difference or not....
