Mecklenburg County, VA, borders on North Carolina. A William CHAVIS lived in Mecklenburg County, VA, in 1830. He was the head of a household with 10 FPOC, according to the federal Census. A Henry CHAVIS, age 52, was the head of household in the same county in the 1850 federal Census. Other members of the household, all carrying the CHAVIS surname, were Betsey (age 48), Jarvis (age 22), Betsey (age 16), Sophia (age 14), and John (age 11).

Could CHAVERS be an early alternative spelling for CHAVIS/CHAVOUS? The 1820 Census for Charlotte County, VA, also bordering NC, lists John CHAVERS, Nancy CHAVERS, and Jacob CHAVERS as heads of household. James BRANDUM and Burwell BRANDUM were other heads of household in Charlotte County in 1820.
