This is an interesting topic. My great great grandmother looks 100% Native American, but is continuously listed as "Mulatto" in the Craven Co. North Carolina Census. I always wondered why this was since she doesn't look like she is anything but Native American. I myself have never seen anyone designated as "Indian" or "Native American" on a NC census but surely there must have been some living there during the 1800's.
