Re: Solomon Bruce and Barney Redman
In Response To: Re: Solomon Bruce and Barney Redman ()
I thought I had made it clear that there was only one Solomon Bruce who had two sets of children. One set was with Jane Fisher and the other was with Nellie (Lett) Redmond. If you examine the 1850 census for Hardy County, you will find Solomon Bruce there with Jane Fisher. The death certificate of Mary Louisa Bruce, daughter of Solomon states that her mother was Jane Fisher. This would correspond with the census information of 1850 which lists Mary as a child of Solomon and Jane. When Andrew Jackson Bruce filed for a pension, he states that his father is Solomon Bruce and his mother is Nellie (Lett) Redmond. This is the same Solomon who left Hardy County, Virginia as stated in Andrew Jackson Bruce's pension file. If you have done any research on early African Americans, particularly those who fought in the Civil
I was in D. C. last week at the National Archives retrieving pension files for over 30 African American Civil War soldiers from southwestern Pennsylvania and many of the files I viewed had soldiers with more than one wife and some were never divorced from the first wife. I hope this settles the conflict about Solomon Bruce from Hardy County not being the same Solomon Bruce who came to Greene County because they were one and the same.
