According to a genealogy published on the Internet, Senator Obama's white ancestors can be traced to a Dunham family which is most likely identical to the Dennum/ Denham family of Tennessee. They originated in Charles City County, Virginia, where Gibby Gibson (son of Elizabeth Chavis), a famous very-light skinned African American left Hannah Dennam two slaves by his 2 March 1727 Charles City County will [DW 1724-31, 122, 161-2, 166-7]. There were several mixed-race Gideon Gibsons. One was a "free colored man" who went to South Carolina with his white wife about 1731 when he was interviewed by the Governor and allowed to stay. Other members of the Gibson family established a very light-skinned community in what was first New Kent County and became Hanover then Louisa County, Virginia. The Bunch family from which Senator Obama and Ralph Bunche also descend were part of this community. John Bunch, a "Mulatto" and Sarah Slayden, a white woman," petitioned the Council of Virginia on 16 August 1705 because the minister of Blisland Parish had refused to marry them. The Attorney General was undecided whether the petition came within the intent of the "Law to prevent Negros and White Persons intermarrying" because John Bunch was already the product of such a union [McIlwaine, Executive Journals of the Council, III: 28, 31].
But I was going to vote for him even if he did not descend from one of the families I research.
