Parents and siblings of Hiram Revels?
Many of us have been looking for the parents and siblings of Hiram Revels. I found on "www.genealogybank.com" in the newspaper "Pomeroys Democrat", dated 1870-06-01 an article about an Eliza Revels, sister of Senator Hirma Revels living in the poor house. Part of this article has what Eliza says about her family. She was 63 at the time of the interview.
She says in the interview that her parents, "Elijah and Phoebe Revels, were born in Georgia, and were free at the time of their marriage. None of their children ever been slaves. She is the oldest of the children and has four brothers- Hiram, Elijah, Willis, and Absalom. The males of the family took after her father being a Methodist minister, and Elijah Jr, is a pastor of a Baptist church in NC; Absalom shouts glad hallelujahs in a Methodist church in Indiana, while Hiram gave up preaching to go into the Senate. Willis alone didn't go into clerical training , but set up a doctor in NC. Hiram is the youngest of the children, being about 25 years the junior of Eliza. He was brought up mainly by his elder brothers, who sent him to school.
Eliza came North many years ago 1810/40? and lived in various places but mostly in New York City, gaining a livelihood as a cook in private families. She has never been married. About five years ago she became unable to work."
I know many of us have seen some of these names and this might point us in some new directions for our Revels families.
