> i. William1, born about 1751, head of a Lincoln County, North Carolina household of 11 "other free" in 1800 [NC:900] and 4 "other free" and a white woman in Rutherford County in 1810 [NC:431]. He made a declaration in Buncombe County court on 7 April 1820 to obtain a Revolutionary War pension. He stated that he was about sixty-nine years old and enlisted in South Carolina in 1775. He was the keeper of Samuel Bell's mill and had no family living with him other than his wife who was about sixty years old [M805-679, frame 0652].

Legend has also related that this William REDMAN supposedly had Cherokee Indian ancestry.

1775 During the American Revolutionary War William REDMAN enlisted in the military under Capt. Francis PRINCE & Col. HUGER. Early in the war, he fought in the first battle at SC,Charlestown,Sullivan's-Island ["Roster of South-Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution" by MOSS p805].

In the late 1770s/ William REDMAN fought in several engagements against the Cherokee Indians including:
- Battle of Seneca
- Battle of Brass town
- Battle of the Tennessee River
- Battle of Grassy branch where he was wounded in the left shoulder by a rifle ball.

1776 William READMON was mentioned briefly in the records of Ft.Prince in SC,Spartanburg-Co when he was paid for merchandise sold to the fort [1940 "History of Spartanburg-Co" by BAND & WHITE].

William READMAN & others appear in JORDAN's accounts of persons who made sales to the fort.

1785-1799 SC,Spartanburg-Co [per HOLCOMBE] The state against William REDMAN & Samuel REDMAN on charges of Petty Larceny -

p085: The defendants came into open court & acknowledged themselves to owe to the State 50 pounds lawful money each.
p116: Ordered that this case continue until next court.

p141: Ordered that capias' issue against defendants returnable to next March Court
& that Scieri Facias' issue against the bail (Failed to appear).

p151: The state against John CONNOR on Scire Facias. Ordered that his recognizance be forfieted in the sum of L25
where in he was bound for the personal appearance of William REDMAN & Samuel REDMAN, in which they failed to do.

p153: Ordered by the court that the county attorney enter Noll Presequi on the indictment.
p274: Ordered that summons issued against William REDMAN to show cause why he did not attend to work on road.

There was a Samuel REDMON in upstate South-Carolina who was part Indian, as was a John. Many moved to Arkansas running from the soldiers who were trying to get them to move to Oklahoma.

Just before 1800, an act of the Legislature officially opened Western North-Carolina to white settlers & the land around Bryson-City was first explored for possible settlement. Missionaries, traders & a few settlers soon followed. One of the earliest preacher-teachers in the area was the Methodist Rev. Ulrich KEENER. He was soon followed by the Baptist & the Quakers who came to preach & remained to settle the land.

1800 Everything west of NC,Burke-Co & NC,Rutherford-Co was part of NC,Buncombe-Co which eventually give up that area for what would become NC,Haywood-Co in 1808 & NC,Macon-Co in 1828 & NC,Jackson-Co in 1851.
