Re: NAs listed on early census
In Response To: NAs listed on early census ()

Linda,

I have not found a single document that explicitly testifies to the Native American ancestry. I have the oral history. I have the AncestrybyDNA analysis that supports it clearly for myself and both of my parents (by testing a maternal and a paternal uncle). There are two surnames of ancestors that are closely associated with the Eastern Siouan families in VA and NC. Finally, the census records describe them as being mulatto.

I doubt that I'll ever have anything beyond this. Those tribes had essentially fallen apart before 1800 and I only have paper records that go back to circa 1860. However, I find the evidence that I have compelling. As I've said before, man writes his records on paper and does a so-so job with the accuracy. Nature writes its records in our DNA and does a fantastic job.
