Hello everyone,

Not to long ago I discovered that my grgr grandfather Adolphus Augustus was in the civil war, then I discovered that he was a free person of color and that he was born in Washington Maryland, but that is where it ends.

I tried to get his pension records from the war, but the navy did not start keeping pension records until the 1880's. I received a few things about his time in the military, but they all gave the same information ie: age, height, color and place of birth.

I know the last name Adolphus is an unusual name and I found several Augustus' in Maryland on up to Massachusetts and as early as 1810 with a FPOC named Caesar Augustus, but I can't find any connection.

HELP!!!!!!! Maybe i'm having a brain freeze but i'm stuck, where do I look next. Also I have grandpa Adolphus living in Rockingham county Va from 1870 until he dies arount 1910?
