Dr. Henry Gates very briefly interviewed me on the Redman family for his PBS show (the 4th segment to be aired the second week in February) because John Redman is one of his ancestors. I found the record of “Mulatto” Nann who was freed by order of the Richmond County, Virginia court in 1697 because she was the daughter of Jane Redman (no race indicated). This seems to be saying (to me anyway) that Jane Redman was a free white woman since, as you know, the status of a child depended on the status of the mother. I put a photocopy of the court record on my site with the lastest update of the Redman family history so you can make up your own mind.

I ordered the Hardy County Personal Property Tax lists through my local library but have so far only received up until 1806. I ordered the Hampshire County lists a few weeks ago, should receive them soon and will post them when I get them.
