Descendants of slaves freed by Lewis.

Evelyn Lewis, who was born in Oklahoma and married a cousin of mine, told me in 1969 that her great-grandfather Lewis had owned a plantation in Virginia, and had 150 slaves. She said that he eventually decided to free the slaves, and return them to Africa.

Evelyn said he sold his plantation, and used the money to pay for their passage. However, she said six decided to remain in the United States, so that would leave 144 who went to Africa.

I wonder if there's a way to find a record of that.

Also, I wonder if there would be any way to trace any of the descendants of those slaves, either in the US or in Liberia, the African country where most of them probably went.
