Re: Quaker and FPOC in Southside VA and NC

One of my main line of ancestors are COPELAND, and indeed, it has been a difficult line to find their origins. I know that my COPELANDs first turned up in Halifax County, North Carolina in the early 1800's, and the current theory is that they are descended from Cato Copeland who was a Revolutionary War soldier, and who later lived in Halifax Co. and died there in 1827. Another COPELAND family in the area was that of Isaac COPELAND who was living in Wake Co.,NC, listed in the census from 1790 - 1830, and I am of the opinion there is a connection between the Wake & Halifax/Warren County families. The problem has been in proving it, have just not been able to find out where either of these families originated. I do know that the Warren/Halifax Co. family were a very light-skinned, almost white looking family, and most probably had white ancestors. It has always been supposed that their origins were Quaker, since the COPELANDs were known Quakers from the area, but again, there is no indication as to just where this may have been, although one of my COPELAND cousins has done a DNA test and was found to be a close match to the TINKER surname of Yorkshire, England, something that has totally thrown us, but interestingly enough, there was a family by that name in the 1790 census in Craven Co.,NC, the same area that Cato Copeland was first listed. But our search goes on...
