ALLEN....Bedford Co., Virginia
A 3rd great grandfather, Peter Allen, married 3rd great grand mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Walden, 4 Aug 1842 in Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH.
Peter's burial record as a Civil War Veteran lists his birthplace as Bedford in Bedford Co., VA on 3 Jun 1820. I'm trying to determine his relationship, if any, to/with Charles Allen, FPOC, found in the 1840 Ohio Census for Ross Co., OH. Charles, head of houshold, has two sons between the ages of 10 & 24 on the 1840 Census record. The 1850 Census record shows his family with wife Martha and one son 20 years of age, along with daughters that fit the 1840 age range for females.
Could Peter be the second son from the 1840 Census?
The 1850 Ohio Census has Peter & Betsy living in Pickaway Co., OH, a county directly North of Ross county. The 1850 ages and birth locations for Peter, Charles & Martha indicate a "strong" possibilty of a relationship.
I'm also researching "Betsy" and her family, the Walden's. Betsy's parents and family are found on the 1840 & 1850 Ohio Census records in Ross county as well. As an aside, Betsy's mother is also an Elizabeth and Betsy has a sister named Lavinia, which is the name of my 2nd great grandmother. (Betsy's and Peter's daughter)
When and how did these Allen's and Walden's come into Ohio as FPOC's?
Guess I now need to post to the Slavery Forum for help in finding records on the Allen's in Bedford Co., Virginia prior to 1840. BTW, I have found Allen's (white) in Bedford Co., between 1789 & 1830 on Tax & Census listings, but nothing at this point to make a connection.
Thanks for listening,
