I remember coming across cases of free people of color purchasing their enslaved relatives and later freeing them. But then there were others who bought, purchased, and used slaves like any other white. This seems to be the case in my slaveowning ancestors of color in Louisiana. I think Carter G. Woodson overemphazied benevolent black slaveowners.
