: Was James Potts Free Colored?
Hi Barbara, I know zero about James POTTS - except what I have from census records. He was free colored - because slavery was phased out in PA in the late 1700's (gradual emancipation) very few slaves were left by the time this family of POTTs were born. Having only learned this surname recently, and pleased to find them in the 1850 census - I haven't been able to go any further yet. I only know both he and his wife were born in PA - where their parents were from I don't know - and haven't yet learned much about the white POTTs families in the area. Will let you know more as I look at other data, Denise
