another slaveowning ancestor of color
man, i found another slaveowner of color in my tree recently. When I first learn about people of color owning slaves in books, I was shocked because i couldnt understand how someone of african descent could own another person of african descent. But then it will got me when I discovered several slaveowners of color in my ancestry. The other day, a fellow researcher located my 4-great grandmother, Henrietta Gradney/Gradenigo in the 1840 census of Opelousas living next door to her son's future mother-in-law, Magdalaine Sabin. She is listed as owning 12 slaves! I wonder how she was able to acquire them. I know that she had several children by my ancestor, Pierre Hubert La Chapelle, a Canadian during that time even though he was married to his white wife(very common back then). Those children were Theophile La Chapelle(my 3rd greatgrandfather), Louis La Chapelle, Joseph La Chapelle, and Hortense La Chapelle.
