Re: Who is the father of Alexandre Lemelle
In Response To: Re: Who is the father of Alexandre Lemelle ()
I had just run across an article mentioning the future manumission of Eleonore and her children Alexandre and Victoire, minutes before I found this thread. I had never heard of them before this. The below paragraph is from the Opelousas Post. "July 31, 1788, Opelousas. Francois Lemelle, officer at the Post, appears before Nicolas Forstall to agree to grant freedom to his mulatto slave Eleonore (who had been given to him by his late mother) and her two children Victoire and Alexandre at the moment of his death. Luc Hollier and Francois Brunet also sign the document." My guess, also, is that (Jean) Francois Lemelle husband of Charlotte Labbe, is the father of the children, and obviously Eleonore his concubine. It clearly states he was an officer of the Post (military), and Francois Lemelle fits the description. This is the same Francois that fathered children with Marie Jeanne Davion? The dealings of the Lemelle men with women of color is astounding/scandalous by today's degrading standards, but I'm simply in awe of the propensity of these women who managed to free their families and successfully maneuver the courts when they felt they were being wronged. They had this down to an art.
