Re: Goens in Longtown Ohio
In Response To: Re: Goens in Longtown Ohio ()
Doug, thanks this really helps. My mother (Helen Louise Milton- whose mother was Meleta Helen (Daniels -born in Liberty,IN)Milton. told me that there was a Sadie Goens. Sadie at a very young age marries a man with the last name of Goens, he was much older than herself. He was a widower and then married Sadie. Now this man had children when he married Sadie. Pearl must have been one of Daniel Goen's daughters, in which case Sadie's step-daughter. However, her and Sadie would not have been very far apart in age. My mom said Sadie had a daughter by Goens and her name was Nellie, whom my mom called "Aunt Nell." Aunt Nell wanted very badly for my mom and her sisters to know who they were related to. Aunt Nell was married to Thomas Metcalfe. I haven't been able to find anything on the Metcalfe's. This sounds like the same family. We didn't know what Sadie's maiden name was.
Pearl marries a man James Milton (Sr)my great grandfather. They have children but it seems that she died either in her 30's or 40. They have a son whom they named Ernest James Milton who marries Helen Daniels (Helen's first name we later find out is Meleta)He then remarries, but my mom did not know the 2nd wife's name.
My mom mentioned something about people being referred to as "free-born."
I was told that Sadie married when whe was quite young.
I have a picture of Pearl Mae(May)Goens who was my ggm not my gm. You can tell she was Mulatto. It appears that she rode horses because she has a riding habit on. We show that Pearl May Goens was actually born in New Paris Pike, Ohio. I think somehow, ended up in Darke County. Maybe through the marriage of Sadie Bass to her father.
If you can find anything else let me know.
Also do you know if the Goens have any Jewish lineage? My mother mentions something about Jews. I know in Darke County or Longtown that there were Germans, Indians and African Americans.
Thank you so much for what you have shared,
