I'm doing a lot of COPELAND research for the North Carolina families in Warren, Halifax, Franklin and Wake Counties, a few who moved to Virginia by the late 1800's to early 1900's. These families are found first about 1800, but I believe their free roots may go back further. You don't mention which County in NC you found your family in, and also what time frame are you looking at?
