Hurst/Hunt FPOC VA
I'm a little late to the party dicussing the Hurst family only because I just learned today that my family changed their name from Hurst to Hunt upon moving to the east coast. I have found a rich and deep history of Free People of Color Hurst ancestors all the way back to 1788, where my research sort of runs dry. I'd love to discuss this more. I also see what appears to be a turn where my family goes from colored/mulatto to white which sort of stabs me in the heart but then I wasn't around them. The family split with some going into white society moving out west, on their next census, after apparently being labeled as "paupers" and a matriarch leading a very large family without support. My ancestor did not pass thus we have black Hurst/Hunt's still going. I'd love to hear more from those of you who have traced your Hurts ancestry. Mine is very solidly centered in Virginia. They were not all slaves. I haven't found any enslavement records in my intense research. They are all listed with jobs as as FPOC.
