In Response To: Re: Burt//Richardson/Hopkins-Halifax Co., North Carolina ()
There is no evidence of Indian ancestry in the Richardson family other than one marriage to a member of the Bass family which had only one Indian in their ancestry: a woman who married John Bass in 1638. Although many free African American families claimed Indian descent, there were no Indian communities in the areas claimed as Indian--such as Halifax County. People with Indian descent blended into the free African American population. Most counties had a population of only a few hundred mixed-race people. They did not have the "luxury" of being so particular about race. In fact, it is rare to find the marriage of a person with proved Indian ancestry to another person with proved Indian ancestry.
