The website you're referring to was probably "American Indian Records", by Steven Pony Hill. He's written several webpages containing his belief that many of the people who were free people of color in the South, were actually Native Americans who were displaced because their race was often confused in the early records. It's actually quite interesting and contains many records that he says supports his beliefs.
