In doing some research on a set of 3rd great-grandparents I've run into a situation I need help with.
3rd great-grandparents Peter Allen & Elizabeth "Betsy" Walden were married in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio on 4 Aug 1842. I have solid documentation on the Walden line prior
to and after Betsy, but my documentation on the Allen's was lacking until recently.
I find the Peter Allen was born 3 Jun 1820 at Beford County, VA. He died 31 Jul 1877 in Shelby County, OH. This information was confirmed by his burial record as a Civil War veteran with the 27th Regiment of the USCT's. I'm now trying to locate Peter's parents.
Since Peter and Betsy were married in 1842, in Ross County, OH I decided to try and locate other FPOC Allen's in Ohio, especially in Ross County thru Census records.
Here is what I found...in 1850 for Ross County there was one (1) AA Allen family.
Allen, Charles 55 KY ***
Martha 45 VA
John 20 TN
Sarah D. 16 AL
Harriett 13 OH
Mary 11 OH
Emalda 9 OH
*** When Charles was born 55 years earlier KY had just become recognized as a State. KY had previously been a part of VA.
In 1850 Peter and Betsy are found in Pickaway County, OH with a 9 month old son, James R. Allen.
In 1840 for Ross County, OH there was again only one (1) FPOC family surnamed Allen.
The family consisted of MALES: two (2) males under 10 years of age, one (1) male between 10 & 24 years of age, one (1) male between 36 & 55 years of age. FEMALES: two (2) under 10 years of age, one (1) between 10 & 24 years of age and one (1) between 36 & 55.
My suspicion is that my Peter Allen is the male child between 10 & 24. There are also other "matches" on age and sex from the two Census years.
What say y'all, am I on firm ground?
Thanks for any input and/or advice.
