My gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather, LEANDER AYERS, was a free person of color living in Kentucky, but claimed MARYLAND as his birthplace. I've done a little online searching and discovered there were dozens of free Ayers in Maryland in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Leander was born circa 1792. But was living in Kentucky as early as 1818.

What ways can I uncover more about Leander [and AYERS] in Maryland? Are there any specific resources I can use? I'm in NYC now and I can get to Maryland in a few hours.
