Slaves have had surnames since the 18th century. Numerous court records reflect this as well as newspaper accounts of slaves. It isn't uncommon for slaves to have surnames. Check Herbert Gutman's book on the Black Family From Slavery to Freedom for several discussions of the usage of surnames by slaves.
