In 1832 William Allen of Surry County Va freed, by his will, a number of slaves. All of these slaves were described in the will by both first and last names. The last names (Taub, Walker, Jones, Givens) were not those of Allen or his family. What does this mean. Normally, slaves were listed and described by first name only. Indeed, in my understanding, most only adopted or utilized a surname post emancipation.
