If you really want to go into the complexity of free people of color in the country, their were free people of african descent in other parts of the Americas as early as the 15th and 16th century. Some of them were of predominantly African descent, while others were of multi-ethnic ancestry. There were also a small percentage of people who immigrated to this side of the world as "free people" instead of slaves. Some of them came from Portugal, Spain, and the West Indies. A few even came from West Africa(especially Goree Island, where the mixed raced children and descendents of Africans and Europeons participated in the Atlantic slave trade as middlemen). If you want to go further than that, their were always free people of african descent in the slave-owning societies of Europe during the 13th to 17th century. So its quote a diverse term and a very complex history.
