I recently received the 1896 Citizenship Application files for my Mayhew's. The Cherokee connection is the Elizabeth Curtis-Mayhew, wife of Danile Mayhew.

Elizabeth was born circa 1800 in Person County, North Carolina to Henry Curtis, Jr. and Mary Goens (Goins). The Curtis family claimed Cherokee as well as the Goens family.

Although the application contained a wealth of information, the Mayhew's were rejected.
