"1836, Goyens, William: For service in the Army of Texas during 1836, the Texas Legislature awards him a tract of land. Born a slave in South Carolina during 1794, he came to Texas in 1821. Having acquired fluency in Spanish and several Indian dialects, he was appointed by Sam Houston as agent to the Cherokee Indians."
