() Hi Nicole,
You asked about the parents of William Redman and Catherine Elkins and their Indian connections. I would also be interested in the source of your information on William Redman who married about 1650 to Elizabeth or Anne Elkins, daughter of Ralph Elkins and Miss Ashton. That appears to be an error, as I believe that it is referring to the same William Elkins but has incorrectly assumed the date of marriage and identity of the wife. William Redman was the son of _____?______ Redman and Anne Meese, daughter of Henry Meese by his first wife, a daughter of Chief Wahanganoche of the Patawomeck Tribe. I would love to know the name of William Redman's father. I have seen it stated before as John, but without any evidence. His mother gave birth to him around 1680 to 1685 before her marriage to her cousin, Dr. Richard Bryant, whose mother, Keziah Arroyah, was a sister of Anne's mother, whose Christian name is thought to have been "Mary". William Redman married first to Catherine Elkins, daughter of Richard Elkins (son of Ralph Elkins and Miss Ashton) by his first wife, Mary Williams, daughter of Evan Williams and Christian Martin, daughter of John and Christian Martin (b. 1637 per her deposition). The descendants of John and Christian Martin had a great amount of Indian blood from the Patawomeck Tribe. Christian's mother is thought to have been the Indian ancestor, Ka-Okee, whose name has been carried down by descendants even to the 20th Century. Pictures of some of the descendants of John and Christian Martin in the late 1800s look like full blooded Indians. Christian Martin's family lived on adjoining land to Chief Wahanganoche and are believed to be descended from one of his sisters. I have never seen the name of William Redman's wife, Catherine, in any official records. As far as I know, it is only a traditional name. It could, therefore, have been Elizabeth or Ann. I think that some people have incorrectly abstracted records of the Bryant family to obtain the name of Elizabeth for Miss Elkins. Richard Elkins married secondly to Elizabeth Bryant, half-sister of William Redman. William Redman married secondly to Ann (Philpin) Jones, widow of George Jones (whose nephew, George Jones, married a niece of Christian Martin Williams, above). Bill
