In my research, I found John Shivers(Chavis), a free mulatto on a 1792 census of free negros and mulattoes in Opelousas Louisiana. There are also a few baptisms and marriages between Chavis in the region I have found. One of the records lists North Carolina as a birthplace. Members of this Chavis family later intermarried with free creole of color families like LACHAPELLE and GRADENIGO/GRADNEY. My people. I am wondering whether or not anyone knows anything about any more Chavis that made their way into Louisiana before 1803(The American period).
