"Richard A. Dawson, a law school student and son of John B. Dawson, the owner of a downtown barbershop.."

The book goes on to how Richard Dawson was admitted to the bar (July 11, 1870), he was the first black man in Illinois to qualify for a bachelor's degree (Same book page 101), from any college or University in Illinois. He had helped out in his father's barber shop while attending the U. of IL. He graduated with in 1870.

A brief entry about Richard A. Dawson coming to AR from IL. He is supposed to have been admitted to practice in AR on Dec 16, 1870. He arrived in Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., AR, sometime before that. It also mentions that he is believed to be the first African American ever to graduate from the Univ. of Chicago School of Law. He attended a convention of some sort in SC representing the State of AR in 1871. He was elected a State

Senator from Jefferson Co., AR in 1873. He was one of four plantiffs in a successful case that same year (1873) brought against a saloon keeper who refused to serve them in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. He acted as Clerk of the Jefferson County Court from 1874-76 and represented Jefferson County again as State Senator in 1879. After 1879 the author doesn't know what became of him. The census shows that he chose to return to Chicago.
