David Owin of Rockingham District, NC

Hello, all! I have a relative for which I can seem to find almost nothing. David Owin, a blacksmith, was found on the 1860 census in Rockingham County, NC along with another woman, Mary Louden (sp?), and a Black boy with the last name of Jordan. David's race alternates on subsequent censuses between White and Mulatto. At one point, he and his whole family is listed as White. However, I have seen pictures of 2 of his children and neither of them look White. One looks decidedly Black. I cannot for the life of me figure out where David Owin comes from. One census states that he is from NC and another that he is from Ohio. I do not know whether he was ever a slave, but I haven't been successful in determining where he comes from or his situation. Any advice??
