We have yet to analyze these manumissions. We gathered them as part of a larger study of the early population of free persons of color in Petersburg. We will link these with the register. We are trying to figure out who moved and who didn't to Petersburg. You might want to look at a just published book by Eva Sheppard Wolf entitled Race and Liberty in the New Nation, LSU Press which does examine manumissions in Virginia between 1782 and Nat Turner. Many of the emancipations in Isle of Wight, Surry etc were done by Quakers and Methodists played a significant role too.
