Re: Name changes for Freed Slaves
In Response To: Name changes for Freed Slaves ()

A slave was a slave until 1865-1868 in someplaces. The slave was only known by one name.

Example:

Toby - Slave Name

Most slave owners documented their slaves. It is just hard to find sometimes. Slave Cenus Schedules, sometimes depending on the state, will give you a slave's name.

Try locating the FREE PERSON OF COLOR in your family who purchased family members or slaves himself.

In most cases, the slave took or had no choice in the matter, the master's name.

In most slave states, when the slave was baptisted, he or she was given a name by his owner that was recorded and sometimes the slave, he or she would gain their FREEDOM at the time.
